- Redcliff is a novel written by Eden Phillpotts, set in the town of Redcliff in Devon, England. The story revolves around the life of a young woman named Mary, who is the daughter of a wealthy mill owner. Mary is engaged to a man named John, but their relationship is not a happy one. John is a selfish and abusive man, and Mary is unhappy with him. She longs to break free from him and find happiness elsewhere. The novel explores the themes of love, family, and societal expectations. Mary's father is a strict and traditional man who believes in the importance of social status and wealth. He disapproves of Mary's desire to break off her engagement with John and marry for love. As the story progresses, Mary meets a young man named Richard who she falls in love with. Richard is a poor artist who does not meet her father's expectations, but Mary is determined to follow her heart. She must navigate the challenges of her father's disapproval, John's jealousy and anger, and the societal pressures of the time. The novel is a classic example of Victorian literature, with its focus on social norms and expectations, and the struggle between duty and desire. It is a poignant and moving story that explores the complexities of love and the human heart. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
